For the first time since the clashes erupted in late September, a serious effort appeared to have been made to renew peace talks deadlocked since the sides failed to agree at the U.S.-brokered Camp David summit in July. Despite the charged atmosphere during the talks in Washington, U.S. negotiators have been pushing for a peace deal to end 52 years of conflict in the region before President Clinton ends his term next month.But fighting continued through the night and into the early morning hours. Palestinian gunmen and Israeli troops battled throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip through the night. The Israeli army said there were gunfights near the Palestinian-ruled city of Nablus and in other parts of the West Bank.Despite the continuing clashes, the day passed without any casualties, a rarity
